Asteroid Vesta's Dark Material

Asteroid Vesta's Dark Material

Vesta dark material

No its not a candidate for dark matter but the Dawn spacecraft that is currently on its way to Ceres has found a carbon-rich, almost coal like substance on the surface of this mighty asteroid. The dark material should help scientists on the Dawn mission to understand early impacts in Vesta's life. The dark deposits can be seen in the image above inside the crater. The Dawn satellite has spent just over a year examining Vesta. It is due to reach Ceres in 2015.
